Early medieval writing in Spain used the so-called Visigothic form belonging to the Latin alphabet, progressively replaced by Carolingian script from the 1 1 th c. Until the development of reformed spelling while in the 13th c., writing in Castile, that is to say other Romance-speaking territories, was carried out by norms passed on, largely through scribal training within the Church, from late Roman times. Changes which took place in spoken language were not necessarily incorporated into the registers used in writing, so the written language continued to contain morphological and lexical elements, in particular, which in fact had ceased for usage in speech. However, the implication of the foregoing discussion of early Spanish (and other Romance) spelling practice is that it is impossible to identify an earliest Spanish text. Texts which have the appearance of being written in Latin, because each word is written in accordance with the etymological principle, are in many cases better described as Spanish texts written in traditional spelling (Wright 1982). In reality, many pre-llth-century. texts, especially notarial texts, are written in a spelling which mixes the etymological and the phonological principles often chaotically. What then happens, in the very early 13th c., is the application to whole texts of the phonological principle, a move which was perhaps inspired by ultra-Pyrenean spelling practice, which for some centuries had been of a predominantly phonological type.
Literary and official Spanish was firmly established, then, by the last quarter belonging to the 13th c., and within the Crown of Castile only Galician provided any competition. This north-western variety achieved a substantially standardized form in the same period, but was essentially in order to lyric poetry, and was otherwise used only in certain chronicles and notarial documents. Hardly any other variety used within the kingdom acquired literary or official status, although local (i.e. non-Toledan) features are now and again recognizable in literary texts written or copied after last 13th c., as well as in non-literary texts for a good while longer.
